Nelson Frye

Independent Pleasure Club

Orange, NJ

Frye played guard for the Independents and also served as the vice president and treasurer for this leading athletic and social club.

His defensive quickness on the court made up for any lack of size, and his enthusiasm and team spirit were essential ingredients to the club’s success.  Frye helped lead the Independents to victories over the favored Alpha Physical Culture Club of Harlem and the Smart Set of Brooklyn, earning the team overdue respect in New York City.  The Independents claimed the New Jersey Colored Championship for 1912-13 with a 14-2 record including a crucial end of season victory over the reigning champion Owl Field Club of Newark.
